Both ICA and the flower chain Blomsterlandet have announced that they are switching to flower trays made of pressed wood fiber instead of the conventional plastic ones. In both cases, the new molded fiber trays come from Stora Enso.

These are the trays on which potted plants are delivered, often eight to ten potted plants on one tray. Stora Enso's trays are manufactured in Sweden from wood fiber pressed from wood sourced from the Nordic region.

The transition to molded fiber trays is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions in the long term. ICA estimates that the transition will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by up to 81%, as it is completely free of plastic and PFAS. Additionally, it is manufactured with 100 percent green electricity. They are estimated to be reusable four to six times in collaboration with growers. Then the trays can be recycled.

"It is part of our sustainability work where we constantly review how we can reduce the use of plastic and become more circular in everything we do," says procurement manager Andreas Karlsson at Blomsterlandet.

"The transition to wood fiber trays will occur gradually, and the first step will involve several of our fine potted plants, followed by an ongoing conversion of our summer flowers," says Sandra Kjellin, Store Manager Flowers, ICA Sweden.

"Together, we're redefining eco-conscious solutions, one tray at a time," says George Ribaeus Beri, Senior Business Development Manager at Stora Enso.
