The Swedish Energy Agency has approved funding for a preparatory study on testing of aviation jet fuel based on Swedish forest waste products. This prestudy is intended to facilitate, and minimise the risks of, the first commercial plant for production of biofuels for jet aviation, based on forest residues in Sweden.

The project stakeholders represent the whole value chain, from airlines to the Swedish forest industry.

RISE (Research Institutes of Sweden) is taking part, and will contribute both to the engineering work involved in converting the existing pilot plant for biofuel production in Piteå, in north-east Sweden, and to techno-economic analysis of the concept.

— It’s going to be really exciting to work on demonstrating and evaluating this technology, which is based in gasification. It’s one of the technologies with the greatest potential to contribute to local production of biofuel for aviation in Sweden, in the short and medium term. We’re striving to rapidly generate preconditions for commercial production by reducing the risks to investors, says Erik Furusjö, senior researcher and project manager at RISE.
