The Swedish company Saveggy, based in Lund, has developed an edible, plant-based coating for fruits and vegetables. Their first product, targeting cucumbers, extends shelf life and eliminates the need for plastic packaging. The coating is made from rapeseed and oat oil and is free from additives and allergens.

Saveggy was founded in 2020 in collaboration with Lund University and has since received support from investors such as Unconventional Ventures, LRF Ventures, and Almi Invest GreenTech. The company has also secured funding from the EU’s innovation program EIC Accelerator to develop the next generation of plant-based coatings for other vegetables like bell peppers, bananas, and eggplants.

With its innovation, Saveggy aims to reduce food waste and plastic use in the food industry, aligning with the EU’s new packaging directive.
